In anticipation of forming a new training group preparing candidates for certification as a Bioenergetic Therapists, the NY Society presents a workshop for professional psychotherapists on the theme of fathers and their influence on the somatopsychic development of personality.

About the Workshop

This workshop begins with the recognition that locating that influence is difficult, concealed, as it often is, by defenses and social attitudes that deny or obscure this profoundly important dynamic process. To uncover the paternal forces can be approached through an encounter with somatopsychic structures and processes. In this workshop the faculty of the NY Society will offer participants an opportunity to use the methods and principles of a bioenergetic analysis to contact the dynamics of fathering in their and others’ personality organization.

The workshop will be conducted in an experiential format and the data studied will be derived from personal experience using a bioenergetic perspective. Since this will involve using active techniques, participants are encouraged to wear clothing that allows for comfortable movement. The workshop is open to both professionals who are considering bioenergetic training as well as those wishing to learn about the bioenergetic approach.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Learn to identify the influence of fathering on the development of personality.
  2. Identify ways fathering influences and affects the organization and structuring of somatopsychic elements of personality.
  3. Observe and investigate defensive organizations that arise from the interaction with threatening and traumatizing fathering patterns.
  4. Observe and investigate defensive organizations that manage internalizations of conflictual relations with fathers and father figures.
  5. Consider and practice psychotherapeutic interventions that address dysfunctional patterns of behavior emerging from early relationships with fathers.
